1. Cremation Chamber

The chamber is designed to withstand the extreme temperatures reached during the cremation process, which can exceed 1,600°F (870°C). Inside, a grate or tray holds the body, allowing for even heat distribution and ensuring that all parts of the body undergo complete combustion.
2. Combustion System
The combustion system is responsible for generating the necessary heat to facilitate cremation. It usually consists of a high-efficiency burner fueled by natural gas, propane, or diesel. Modern cremators often feature multiple burners arranged to ensure optimal heat distribution within the chamber. The burners are controlled by an automated system that monitors and regulates the temperature and combustion process, ensuring efficient and complete cremation.
3. Emission Control Systems
Environmental concerns have led to the development of sophisticated emission control systems in modern cremation equipment. These systems include filters and scrubbers that capture and neutralize harmful pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, before they are released into the atmosphere. Many crematoriums also employ energy recovery systems that capture and reuse heat generated during the cremation process, reducing energy consumption and further minimizing environmental impact.
4. Automation and Control Panels
To enhance safety and efficiency, modern cremation equipment is highly automated. Control panels equipped with digital interfaces allow operators to monitor and control various aspects of the cremation process, including temperature settings, burner operation, and emission control systems. These panels also often include safety features such as emergency shut-off switches and alarms that activate in the event of malfunctions or unsafe conditions.
5. After-Cremation Handling
Once the cremation process is complete, the remaining bone fragments, known as cremated remains or ashes, are carefully removed from the chamber. This typically involves using specialized tools to gently sweep or scoop the remains into a container provided by the family. Many crematoriums also offer services such as grinding the remains into a finer powder, if requested, and placing them in an urn or other container suitable for memorialization or burial.
